Pass It Forward: Freedom Summer Internship Fund
A fundraising campaign for Sunflower County Freedom Project.
About This Campaign
The SCFP intern program has now grown to 137 alumni across 20 years, with folks scattered all across the country. As we have chatted with alumni, we’ve been struck by how often they will say that they got just as much from the SCFP as they gave that summer. The SCFP impacts not just the students, but also the 137 alumni, who have had a formative summer experience.
In recent years, the SCFP has had its usual intern classes with college students applying from around the country – but we’ve been also hiring former Freedom Fellows from Ms. Breyanna Hooper (Hoop, there she is) to Rodarious Turner and Primus Apolonio. You can imagine how meaningful and inspirational it is for Freedom Fellows to learn from these SCFP alumni Since many of our alumni attend colleges with limited resources for summer internships, the SCFP has shouldered the burden of providing a stipend because of the importance of these experiences for both former and current Freedom Fellows.
Therefore we are asking you – our former summer interns– to help us start a fund to help defray the costs for former Freedom Fellows who are dedicated to giving back through a summer of service. Please help us give a former Freedom Fellow the opportunity to make an impact, to eat dozens of pb&js, and to learn from the SCFP’s amazing students. Help us strengthen our ability to impact the lives of Sunflower County students and families by passing forward the experience of a Freedom Summer internship.

Campaign to Support Sunflower County Freedom Project
At the Sunflower County Freedom Project, we believe that education is the seed of freedom. Without a challenging, achievement-oriented education, children in the Mississippi Delta will be as powerless in the future as were illiterate sharecroppers in the twentieth century. We provide after-school and summer school programming to students in grades 7-12. Our programs are rooted in five tenets: academic support, health and wellness training, arts enrichment, educational travel and character development. For every student that has completed our six-year fellowship, 100% of them have gone on to the university or college of their choosing or joined the armed forces.
